What is high carbon steel
1. What is the material of high-carbon steel? High-carbon steel refers to a carbon steel alloy. The carbon content of this synthetic steel is generally between 0.65% and 1.35%. This material has good wear resistance and high hardness, but its thermal hardness is poor, and its hardness is poor at high temperature, so it is easy to be cut. Due to its high carbon content, cracks may appear during water quenching, so water quenching is often not used. The material is easy to make and low in cost, so it is widely used to make parts such as drill bits and reamers.
2. The higher the carbon content in carbon steel, the greater the hardness and the higher the strength, but the lower the plasticity. After heat treatment or cooling and drawing hardening, high-carbon steel will have very high strength and hardness, and also have high-strength elastic limit and fatigue resistance limit, which is very convenient for cutting and cutting.
What is the hardness of high carbon steel
The hardness of high-carbon steel mainly depends on the amount of solid-dissolved carbon in the steel, and increases with the increase of the amount of solid-dissolved carbon. When the amount of solid solution carbon exceeds 0.6%, the hardness does not increase after quenching, but the number of excess carbides increases, the wear resistance of the steel increases slightly, and the plasticity, toughness and elasticity decrease. For this reason, different steel grades are often selected according to the conditions of use and the matching of the strength and toughness of the steel. "
Difference Between High Carbon Steel and Low Carbon Steel Compare the Difference Between Similar Terms
The difference between high carbon steel and low carbon steel mainly lies in the difference in toughness and application:
1. The difference in toughness
Low carbon steel: the annealed structure is ferrite and a small amount of pearlite, its strength and hardness are low, and its plasticity and toughness are good. Therefore, its cold formability is good, and it can be cold formed by curling, bending, stamping and other methods.
High carbon steel: After proper heat treatment or cold drawing hardening, it has high strength and hardness, high elastic limit and fatigue limit, and the cutting performance is acceptable, but the welding performance and cold plastic deformation ability are poor.
2. Application difference
Low carbon steel: It has good weldability, and the carbon content is from 0.10% to 0.30%. Low carbon steel is easy to accept various processing such as forging, welding and cutting, and is often used to manufacture chains, rivets, bolts, shafts, etc.
High carbon steel: mainly used in the manufacture of springs and wear-resistant parts. Carbon tool steel is a high-carbon steel that basically does not add alloying elements. It is also a tool steel with low cost, good cold and hot workability, and a wide range of applications.
